Mineral scale is particularly noticeable in hard-water areas when water is heated. As water temperature increases, its ability to retain calcium in solution decreases, allowing calcium ions to become supersaturated and form deposits on heating elements, pipework, taps, shower fittings and other water-contact surfaces.

The ActivFlo Hard Water & Limescale Treatment System from INTA uses catalytic water treatment technology to address this issue without electricity, salt or chemical additives. The compact unit is installed directly into the domestic water pipe, allowing the water to pass through the catalytic treatment section before reaching downstream appliances and fixtures.

ActivFlo does not operate as a conventional filtration system. It does not require filter cartridges, does not remove naturally occurring minerals from the water and does not introduce salt or chemicals into the water supply. Instead, the system is designed to alter the characteristics of calcium carbonate formation, helping reduce the tendency of mineral deposits to adhere strongly to surfaces.

Catalytic Water Treatment Technology

Inside ActivFlo is a patented catalytic alloy manufactured from a combination of semi-precious metals. As water passes through the device, the natural conductivity of the water enables interaction between the catalytic metals and creates an electrical field at the alloy surface.

This process promotes the precipitation of calcium and bicarbonate ions into microscopic calcium carbonate crystals known as aragonite. Compared with conventional scale deposits, aragonite has a smoother crystal structure and is less likely to adhere strongly to surfaces.

As a result, any mineral residue that forms on surfaces such as shower screens, taps or bathroom fittings can be easier to remove through normal cleaning, without relying on aggressive chemicals or intensive scrubbing.

The technology therefore provides a different approach to conventional water softening and filtration. Rather than removing calcium and magnesium from the water, ActivFlo conditions the water to help control the way these minerals form and deposit.
