Flamco (Netherlands) Commits to Sustainability

Flamco's new headquarters in Almere, Netherlands, has achieved BREEAM “Excellent” certification for its expanded sustainable production facilities, enhanced warehousing and logistics capabilities, a new R&D center, offices, and a high-tech training center. The new headquarters features a modern heating and cooling system, providing high comfort and operating without fossil fuels for maximum energy efficiency. For this reason, among others, the building was rated "Excellent" by BREEAM. Aalberts NV CEO Van de Veen shared his thoughts:

How Flamco's Products Make an Impact

While the transition from fossil fuel-based heat sources to renewable energy is a sensible approach, it is not always a universal solution. Instead, heating systems and all their components must be considered holistically to maximize savings potential. Individual system components can be replaced with less time and cost – and they quickly pay for themselves while generating significant energy savings and reducing CO2 emissions.

Energy-Saving Products

A prime example is the Flamco XStream Dirt & Air Separator, which saves up to 15% energy, thereby reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. These not only make central heating systems more efficient and cost-effective but also lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Flamco has donated to UN-certified sustainable hydropower projects in Brazil. This contribution is based on the annual CO2 savings from the separators sold for heating systems. Through this initiative, they have doubled their CO2 savings! In 2023, the total CO2 saved by installed facilities exceeded 10,744 tons.

CO2 Optimized Products (Throughout the Product Lifecycle)

At Flamco, engineers constantly work to reduce the carbon footprint of their products as much as possible. This is why Flamco carefully considers the use of the most environmentally friendly materials or researches ways to extend product lifespan.

The Product Lifecycle Analysis (LCA) methodology helps Flamco measure the CO2 emission impact of its products throughout their lifecycle. In this way, Flamco can determine that its expansion vessels, for example, have a 65% lower carbon footprint over their lifecycle compared to market standards.

Implementing Renewable Energy Installations

In simple terms: Sustainable energy is renewable energy. Without the use of renewable energy, the construction industry cannot meet the necessary CO2 reduction targets to achieve the EU's goal of at least a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The FlexTherm Eco is a heat charging station that makes energy conversion feasible. This station converts direct electricity into heat and stores it for hot water supply. It is also clean and environmentally friendly because it burns no fuel, contains no hazardous substances, and is 100% recyclable.

Flamco has contributed to the realization of 906,734 renewable energy installations – accounting for nearly 3% of all such systems in Europe!

Flamco's Sustainability Goals Over the Years

• 2022: Flamco can measure total CO2 emissions and thus improve sustainability.
• 2023: Flamco can demonstrate the brand's energy and water-saving solutions, contributing to environmentally friendly buildings.
• 2024: Flamco will reduce printed & in-out packaging material by 20%.
• 2025: Flamco will only develop products and technologies with a circular design. Waste will be optimally recycled.

CO2 Emissions Saved by Flamco Over the Years

Annually, Flamco's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Scope 1 and 2 are measured at 100% of Flamco's units and recorded in emission reports. The CO2 footprint is therefore a useful tool for gaining insight into current performance regarding carbon dioxide emissions. Using this information allows for concrete actions to reduce those emissions.
