Flexcon Expansion Vessels
An expansion vessel is used in chilled water systems (Chiller) and hot water heating systems (Heating), collectively referred to as HVAC systems. It is specifically designed to be installed on the return line of a closed-loop hydronic system. True to its name, an expansion vessel is designed to accommodate the expansion of water as its temperature rises. As water heats up, its volume increases, causing system pressure to rise. The expansion vessel absorbs this excess water volume, preventing excessive pressure, pipeline leakage, and damage to the piping network and connected equipment. The diaphragm inside the vessel expands to accommodate the increased water volume based on the calculated thermal expansion of the system. As the water cools and system pressure decreases, the stored water flows back into the system, allowing this expansion and contraction cycle to continue automatically throughout normal operation. There are two main types of expansion vessels used in HVAC applications: standard expansion vessels and automatic pressurization systems, which use compressors or pumps to automatically maintain system pressure and replenish water when required. Both solutions are widely used in modern HVAC system designs, with the appropriate choice depending on system size and operational requirements.
